There’s an awful lot of labor unrest in the media business at the moment.
In Hollywood, the writers and directors are already on strike and the actors seem set to follow them.
On the less glamorous coast, the staff of Business Insider has been on strike for a fortnight. To whom will we turn for our insider business info if they can’t strike a deal?
Various newspapers and magazines have announced layoffs and, as I predicted back in January, the unions that staff at these outlets had formed over the last couple of years have proven absolutely powerless to stop them.
At the heart of all of these disputes lies one simple fact: in the internet age, it’s hard to get people to pay for content.
Well, that’s alright isn’t it? I mean, “information wants to be free” doesn’t it?
Yes and no.
